Fast forward 20 years: "Bruny Island is a thriving, world-leading regenerative destination — a living place where community and environment flourish together. Tourism plays a pivotal role in supporting local livelihoods, safeguarding wildlife and ecosystems, and nurturing a deep connection to place — where the wellbeing of both locals and visitors is celebrated in harmony."
We’re inviting Bruny Island locals - and anyone who loves the island - to explore their vision for the future through the Postcards to the Future Competition, which invites you to imagine Bruny Island 20 years from now in 2044. We ask you to share your vision for a thriving, sustainable future in the form of a postcard.
On the front, draw how you see the island flourishing—its community, environment, and visitors working together in harmony. On the back, write a heartfelt message to the future, sharing your hopes and dreams for Bruny’s people, wildlife, and unique way of life. Together, let’s inspire ideas and solutions that protect what makes Bruny so special while creating a brighter tomorrow.
Tourism has shaped Bruny Island in many ways, and this competition is part of a larger project exploring how tourism can continue to support the island’s unique environment, community, and way of life.
*Your postcards will contribute to important conversations about Bruny’s future and be shared with community leaders, businesses, and council to guide sustainable tourism and development.
1. Download the Postcard Template (see below)
Once downloaded, we recommend printing the postcard double-sided. While digital submissions are welcome, we encourage you to step away from the screen, enjoy a digital detox, and get out into nature—perhaps even visit your favourite place on the island—to bring your vision to life!
2. Create Your Postcard
3. Submit Your Entry
Open to All ages, locals, and visitors alike! Anyone who cares for the future of Bruny.
Deadline: Submit your Postcard by 30th June 2025
Community voting: July 2025
Judging: All other categories will be judged by a panel of three islanders. Entries will be evaluated based on the merit of the award categories, with consideration given to both the artwork and the written message on the postcard. The panel will be looking for creativity, thoughtfulness, and alignment with the vision of a thriving, sustainable Bruny Island. Each entry will be judged fairly, regardless of age or artistic skill, to ensure every voice is celebrated.
Winners Announced: August 2025
Winners will be featured in a community exhibit and online gallery showcasing visions for Bruny’s future.
Place is more than a location — it's a living weave of memory, meaning, and belonging.
It holds the footsteps of those who came before, the rhythms of the land itself, and the quiet stories etched into wind, water, and stone.
To connect with place is to enter a relationship — one that stretches backward through ancestral roots and forward into future care.
It’s where our lives intertwine with the land, not just as visitors, but as part of its unfolding story.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of Lunawanna-alonnah − the Nuenonne (pronounced "Nyu-no-ni") people who walked upon and cared for this island and its waterways for over 40,000 years. We pay our respects to Lutruwita and all Tasmanian Aboriginals; all of whom have survived invasion and dispossession, and continue to maintain their identity and culture.
