A THRIVING FUTURE FOR BRUNY ISLAND

Designing tourism that supports community, restores nature, and enriches the island experience

about the project

Hello I'm Fuchsia, a 3rd-year PhD student, social impact entrepreneur, and former resident of beautiful Bruny Island.

My time living in Apollo Bay then a tiny home on South Bruny ignited my passion for this unique island and its incredible community. This love now drives my *PhD project, Bruny 2044 — which explores community-led, resilient, and regenerative approaches to tourism, designed by the community to benefit locals, visitors, and the island itself.

Through my research, I’ve uncovered the limitations of traditional sustainability models. That’s why I’m focused on developing a pioneering, community-led Regenerative Tourism Framework - one that starts with Bruny Island but has the potential to inspire communities globally.

I invite you to join me in this journey of co-designing solutions that reflect the needs, values, and aspirations of Bruny’s people while protecting its environment and enhancing the visitor experience.

Bruny 2044 is built on a simple belief: by taking thoughtful steps today, we can help shape a future that truly serves the island and its community - we can't predict the future but we can design it!

Below, you’ll find three simple ways to get involved. All findings will be made publicly available by August 2025 and shared with the Bruny Island community and key stakeholders to drive meaningful change.

Together, let’s create a thriving, regenerative future for Bruny - one that protects and celebrates everything that makes this island truly unique.

*This is not a traditional PhD but an “Entrepreneurial Pathway,” judged on the real-world impact of my research.  My goal is to ensure the outcome of workshops and surveys create actionable insights that lead to positive change for Bruny — shaping tourism that truly supports the community, protects the environment, and enhances life for everyone on the island.

Speaking to a wide range of the island community and stakeholders will bring great insight and influence the topics and problems we tackle in the workshops.

Fuchsia will be on Bruny Island from

22 - 30th of Nov 2024 to meet in person

*Interviews will be held Sept - Dec  2024 taking no more than 45 minutes, preferably conducted via Zoom.

It's nice to see a friendly face.

Fuchsia will be facilitating several community-led  Design Thinking workshops across the island.

Please join here at on of them:

Alonnah Hall - 23  and 26 - 28th Nov 2024

Dennes Point Hall  - 29 - 30th Nov 2024

*Looking for 6 - 2O participants for each workshop. Participants can be locals, business owners or travellers.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this research journey so far.

Over the past year, we’ve listened deeply to the community — through interviews, surveys, and workshops.

Together, we gathered over 200 ideas about tourism, community, and place. These have been refined into 34 key statements, reflecting the values, aspirations, and concerns of the Bruny Island community.

Now, as a final step we need your help to prioritise them.

proven expertise in driving real impact

Fuchsia brings extensive experience in working with communities and business to create meaningful change through tourism initiatives. A standout example is her involvement in developing a 20 year Masterplan in Arnhem Land with the Yolŋu people, where she designed and facilitated a collaborative process that empowered the community to take ownership of their future through tourism.

As the first of its kind in Australia, this project involved building a framework, guiding principles and developing tourism products that fostered economic stability while respecting cultural and environmental values. By ensuring the initiative was community-led, the project delivered tangible outcomes aligned with the Yolŋu people’s values and aspirations.

As a skilled communicator and strategic thinker, Fuchsia has a history of turning insights into actionable solutions. Her work is rooted in a commitment to real impact, ensuring that consultation leads to concrete results. This same dedication underpins her approach on Bruny Island, where she aims to co-create strategies that protect the environment, enrich community life, and ensure a thriving future for the island.

what is regenerative tourism?

Regenerative tourism goes beyond sustainability — it’s a transformative approach that aims to enrich local livelihoods, celebrate cultural heritage, and restore the natural environment of a destination.

At its core, regenerative tourism is rooted in living systems thinking — recognising that communities, ecosystems, and economies are interconnected and constantly evolving. It seeks to deliver a net-positive impact on people, place, and planet by supporting the long-term renewal and flourishing of these dynamic relationships.

When local communities lead the way, their needs, values, and aspirations shape tourism from the ground up. This ensures that positive impacts endure long after visitors leave — cultivating thriving ecosystems and vibrant communities for generations to come.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It's not.”

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of Lunawanna-alonnah − the Nuenonne (pronounced "Nyu-no-ni") people who walked upon and cared for this island and its waterways for over 40,000 years. We pay our respects to Lutruwita and all Tasmanian Aboriginals.

As we explore pathways for regenerative tourism, we recognise that true sustainability must be grounded in Indigenous wisdom, and guided by respect, reciprocity, and care for Country.
