This doctoral research explores how communities can move beyond sustainability to lead regenerative change in tourism and beyond. Developed in collaboration with the community of Lunawanna-alonnah/Bruny Island, Lutruwita/Tasmania, the Roots & Resilience (R³) Regenerative Tourism Framework offers practical tools and insights to bring regeneration to life through community vision, collaboration, and action.
The research combines design thinking workshops, Q methodology, and the VVE-5 Regenerative Potential Index, an original compass created in this thesis to help communities assess and prioritise initiatives. Co-designed elements ensured that local priorities shaped outcomes, making the approach adaptable far beyond Bruny Island. Together, these methods support communities to lead from the ground up, creating pathways that revitalise livelihoods, rewild ecosystems, and strengthen local governance.
“We cannot predict the future, but we can co-design futures worthy of our descendants and the Earth that sustains us.”

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we live, work, play and learn. We pay our respects to their elders, past, present, and emerging, and extend that respect to all Indigenous peoples who contribute to the ongoing stewardship of planet earth.
As we explore pathways for regenerative tourism, we recognise that true sustainability must be grounded in Indigenous wisdom, and guided by respect, reciprocity, and care for Country.
